There are excellent road links through Denmark, and with some stunning coastline it’s a scenic and comfortable drive. Many of the roads in Denmark are also quieter and less congested than those in the UK and other parts of Europe, so also convenient for those who are travelling with a caravan. Follow the Marguerite Route for a particularly scenic journey, through historic towns and villages lined with traditional timbered houses.
Taking the ferry to Denmark is a great way to enjoy an alternative holiday, with some wonderful destinations within close range. You also have the added advantage of being able to pack as much luggage as you are able to carry, with none of the baggage restrictions you get from airlines.
Denmark itself is home to many great blue flag beaches and of course the famous Legoland theme park ideal for family holidays! Nearby Sweden is an ideal destination for an outdoor holiday with lakes for sailing and swimming, and in the winter months skiing, skating and ice climbing. As with Denmark, you’ll find stunning picturesque views with long coastlines, beaches and forests.
DFDS Seaways also operates a crossing between Copenhagen and Oslo, so it is possible to connect to Norway having taken the ferry from Harwich to Esbjerg. Both the M.s. Crown of Scandinavia and M.s. Pearl of Scandinavia sail from Copenhagen daily, departing at 5pm and arriving early the following morning in Oslo.
It is around a 3-4 hour drive from Esbjerg to Copenhagen, so it is advisable to arrange an overnight stay in Denmark to then take the connecting ferry to Oslo the following day after your arrival in Esbjerg.
With no direct ferry from the UK to Norway, the ferry to Esbjerg and then onward from Copenhagen to Oslo is a great alternative. Once you’re in Norway you will have access to this vast country of fjords, mountains and lakes. In winter, you Norway is also a popular destination with skiers with a number of popular ski resorts.
